Sunday Roundup

Sunday Roundup: The mind of Murakami, text-walking lanes, & moving to Scandinavia for a better life

June 21, 2015

It’s Father’s Day today, and it also happens to be the first International Yoga Day for all the Yogi’s out there! I tried yoga once. Like, properly tried yoga. I don’t even mean putting on a Youtube video and effectively just doing 2-second stretches in my living room (✋ guilty also, but at least I gave this a try too). It was in the middle of nowhere in Vietnam, at a charming luxury, beach-bungalow type hotel I was staying at that moonlighted as a zen-camp. Even though the room smelled of sandalwood incense, we looked on towards the jungle and mountains, and the remaining decor comprised of dark, mahogany red wood, off-white walls and those shiny, grey pebbles you find at any semi-decent spa. Basically, the markers of a calming atmosphere but designed by someone with a questionable color palette. Anyway, it didn’t work. It literally didn’t work. I was bored. My mind was thinking about absolutely everything that probably didn’t need to  be thought about. I’m not even going to pretend I had reached, at least, a higher enlightenment in my thoughts. It was more, ‘is there going to be bacon at breakfast?’ or ‘I wonder if there are monkeys in that jungle?’. Don’t even get me started on meditation. We did that for the first 15 minutes and I kept one eye open to go all Miyagi on the mosquito flying around me. – Jenn
